  • AUSPICIOUS DةCOR: Peng Chew Culture Products Shop manager Yeoh Seng Chuan, 51, showing the Lo Han fish ornaments in Penang on Monday. The ornaments make ideal Chinese New Year gift.

Yeoh said he even started selling the items, made from rubber and limestone, as Christmas gifts.

“As the fish is very popular among the local Chinese community and Chinese New Year is just around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to promote them.

“The ornaments and other items are produced at a Sungai Petani factory,'' he said at his shop in Prangin Mall.

The craze for rearing the fish started after someone claimed to have made it rich after getting his lottery numbers from the black markings on the fish's body.
