KUALA LUMPUR: The family of Chong Wei Siah, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident on New Year's Eve, wants to see the driver responsible brought to book.
Wei Siah, 24, a toy promoter, died of severe head injuries after she was hit by a Proton Wira along the Middle Ring Road II (MRR2) near Gombak.
News of her death reached her family just when they were exchanging wishes moments after the New Year countdown last Wednesday.
According to her mother Yee Yew Lian, 52, she was watching the live telecast of the New Year celebrations on television with her husband and four other children at their house in Cheras when the doorbell rang.
On opening the door, they found several friends of her daughter, who had come with the tragic news.
“We were shocked and could not accept it,'' said Yee on Tuesday at a press conference arranged by the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Michael Chong.
She said Wei Siah had gone to a friend's house in Taman Samudra, Gombak on her motorcycle at 11pm on Tuesday. She and the friend then waited by the roadside of MRR2 for another friend to pick them up.
“On seeing their friend's car stopping on the other side of the road, both of them started crossing the highway when my daughter was hit by a light-blue Proton Wira.”
Yee added that the driver sped off without stopping and had yet to lodge a police report.
The family was appealing to eyewitnesses to contact Chong's office at 03-2161 8044.
