10,000 for final leg of run before Utar ground-breaking event

IPOH: About 10,000 people, comprising MCA Youth members and supporters from various associations and the public, are expected to take part in the final leg of the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) torch run before the ground-breaking ceremony for the university in Kampar on Sun-day. 

A day earlier, the ninth leg of the run will be flagged off at Gopeng (at 9am). 

The run will continue thro-ugh Batu Gajah, Tronoh and Pusing. 

Perak MCA Youth chairman Datuk Tan Chin Meng said about 20,000 people, from 20 MCA divisions in the state as well as from some 500 Chinese associations, had taken part in the past eight legs of the torch run series. 

“We also have the support of the Wanita MCA, who have organised the We Love Utar charity food fairs during these events,” he told reporters at the Perak MCA headquarters here, yesterday. 

Present at the press conference were MCA Youth exco member Thong Fah Chong, Perak MCA Youth adviser Ling Hee Leong and secretary Ho You Meng. 

Tan said the final leg of the torch run would start at the Kampar town padang at noon, ahead of the Utar ground-breaking at Bandar Baru Kam-par by Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Moha-mad. 

He said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik was expected to receive the torch at the Utar site at 1.45pm. 

MCA Youth deputy chief and Kluang MP Ho Seong Chan would also light the cauldron at the site. 

Before the ground-breaking event, themed Culture of Grat-itude, a motorcade of 1,300 vehicles would lead Dr Maha-thir to the site from the Malim Nawar junction. 

About 30,000 people are expected at the function.
