PENANG: The Anti-Corruption Agency is sending its officers for courses on basic engineering to train them to investigate abuses involving buildings constructed without complying with specifications.

ACA deputy director-general Datuk Mohd Zawawi Mohd Nordin said 30 officers would attend the three-month course at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in May.

“Our officers need to acquire some knowledge in engineering following recent cases involving the structural integrity of buildings,” he told newsmen yesterday after witnessing a handing over of duties ceremony at the state ACA office at Wisma PSCI here.

Former state ACA director Abdul Rahim Mustakain, 52, who was transferred to Pahang on promotion, handed over his duties to Abu Kassim Mohamed, 42, who was formerly ACA director in Perak.

Abu Kassim holds the distinction of being one of two Asian representatives in the International Group Expert on Corruption, a body set up by Interpol for international co-operation to combat corruption.

He was credited with smashing the “flying licence” scam in Perak two years ago.

Mohd Zawawi said the agency would soon send its second batch of 30 officers to attend a course in basic accountancy conducted by Universiti Teknologi Mara.

He said the first batch of 30 officers completed their course in October.

“We are sending some of our officers with more than three years experience for the course as it will be useful in investigating white-collar crimes,” he added.

He said the agency was hiring people from different disciplines such as law, engineering, accountancy, IT and construction to beef up investigative work.

The agency hires between 30 and 60 investigation officers annually, he added.

Mohd Zawawi added that the agency would continue to seek help on intelligence and investigations from the Hong Kong-based Independent Commission Against Corruption.
