ROMPIN: Good news await 72 villagers in Kampung Rompin Utama, here, who are set to make returns from their idle land when an entrepreneur begins cultivation next month.
The land size which is more than 172ha will be cultivated by 42-year-old Salleh Basiron, who was awarded “most successful farmer” at the national level last year.
According to Muadzam Shah assemblywoman and State Culture, Arts, Tourism and Women’s Affairs Committee chairman Datuk Maznah Mazlan, Salleh had helped cultivate padi fields in Kampung Tangga Batu, Malacca, and Kampung Terusan Seberang Juasseh in Negri Sembilan.
“What Salleh has done there is indeed a worthy effort and has benefited the farmers – and the same will be done here,” Maznah said after witnessing the signing of an agreement between Salleh and the 72 farmers at Leban Chondong here on Friday.
Maznah said the farmers had been growing padi on their land but it did not produce good yields.
Rompin Umno division chief and Bukit Ibam assemblyman Datuk Hasan Arifin said the farmers should be grateful that Salleh was willing to work on their land without having to pay him.
“All cost needed to develop the land, estimated at RM800,000, will be borne by Salleh. Apart from that, farmers will receive RM300 each after the fourth harvesting season,” he said.
Only a handful of the farmers were actually working on them.
Salleh said work would be carried out early next month starting with the irrigation system and if everything went according to his plans, the farmers would be getting their payment from the harvest next year.
One of the farmers, Mat Hakim Mat Amin, 80, said he could no longer work on his land because of old age and he was happy that Salleh was able to help them.
