GOMBAK: The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIU) has suspended the second wife of former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Ghafar Baba, D. Heryati Abdul Rahim, and three other students from their studies for committing khalwat (close proximity).

The university's acting director, Prof Ismawi Zen, said the university’s disciplinary board meted out the suspension yesterday after hearing explanations from the four, who had earlier pleaded guilty in the Syariah Court.

“Our regulations are clear and we will act according to procedure, and in this case our action is based on the Syariah Court’s decision,” he told reporters at the university’s Hari Raya reception at its campus here yesterday.

Ismawi said the board would hold a second hearing after obtaining further information on the case.

It would then decide on the period of suspension or even to impose heavier penalties, which could include expulsion, he said.

On Monday, Heryati, 41, and Bosnian students Admir Melinovic, 23, Izudin Mulalic, 27, and Mirza Trako, 25, were charged with being caught in a situation which could give rise to suspicion of their involvement in immoral actions at the Heritage Condominium in Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur at midnight Sept 28.

Syariah High Court Judge Abu Bakar Ahmad discharged the four with a caution after they pleaded guilty to the charge.

Ismawi said the university took a serious view of the case.

“Since this case involved the question of morality, the university’s position, I believe, is that we will not compromise,” he said. – Bernama
