PENANG: The state government is amending the Penang Island Structure Plan to implement the proposed Penang Hill – Teluk Bahang cable car system.

State tourism committee chairman Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen said the state had approved in principle the change in the location of the cable car station to Teluk Bahang from the original proposed site in Youth Park.

She said Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon would soon meet the technical committee to work out the change in routing.

“The new link is more feasible because it will cover the Batu Feringghi tourist belt,” she said after welcoming 170 passengers from Singapore in conjunction with the New Year celebration at the Penang International Airport yesterday.

The passengers were greeted by representatives from the tourism authorities wearing traditional attire and bearing bunga manggar, accompanied by the beat of the kompang.

The male passengers were given “Visit Penang” t-shirts and the women bunga telur.
