KAMPAR: More than 20,000 people are expected at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar) main campus here on Jan 12, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik.

He said Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad would be gracing the event that the Chinese community had been awaiting for 33 years.

“At least 20,000 people will be invited, ,” he said yesterday after chairing a meeting here on the event.

Present at the meeting, which included a visit to the Utar site, were Perak MCA chairman Datuk Ong Ka Chuan, state MCA Youth chairman Datuk Tan Chin Meng, Kampar MP Tan Sri Hew See Tong, party leaders and members.

Dr Ling, stressing that Utar would have no racial quota, said he hoped the Government could set up a scholarship programme to entice non-Chinese students, especially bumiputras.
