KUALA LUMPUR: In line with efforts to promote the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English, the Government has extended the age limit of contract teachers by five years to 65, effective today.

Teachers up for retirement before the end of a school year will automatically be offered contract positions.

Education Minister Tan Sri Musa Mohamad said priority would be given to Mathematics, Science and English teachers as well as those in vernacular schools in implementing both measures.

Noting that the age limit for contract teachers was being extended in view of the shortage of teachers, particularly in certain critical subjects, he said the contracts offered would vary depending on the demand.

“Although the ministry will offer these contract posts based on need, teachers who do not receive offers can also apply.

“We hope that these measures will help ensure success in the move to teach Maths and Science in English,” he told reporters after appearing on TV1’s Selamat Pagi Malaysia programme yesterday.

Musa said teachers due to retire in the middle of a school year would be offered contract positions to avoid disruption of classes.
