A red tide phenomenon hit Tanjung Gelam beach at Mengabang Telipot in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, since Oct 21. Locals were shocked to see the beach flooded with "red seaweed." Dr John Maidin, senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia's Borneo Marine Research Insitute in Sabah, explained that the red algae bloom was caused by the accumulation of a group of dinoflagellates aquatic organisms, which produces the red colour in large concentrated amount. The School of Marine and Environmental Sciences of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu will be taking samples of the red algae for analysis.
