The Perak Health Department has been conducting monthly "sudden" checks against every school in the state to curb high incidents of food poisoning. Its director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said 195 premises involving 89 hostel kitchens and 106 canteens had been checked between Oct 10 and 12. Four hostel kitchens were instructed to cease operations under Section 18 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988. Thirty-four notices were issued over violations of the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009. The food operators were also slapped with RM1,000 fine. Dr Juita said health officers had found rats and cockroaches in some premises which led to the closure order. The highest offences committed were poor hygiene and staff not given anti-typhoid injections (41.2%), staff not trained in food hygiene (32.4%), and food handlers did not wear clean clothing (26.4%). As of Oct 12, as many as 1,015 out of 1,411 of food poisoning cases involving schools had been reported this year.
