Consumers cry foul over high cattle prices

Many consumers are complaining about the higher price of cattle for the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration this year. 50-year-old teacher, Maznah Abu Samah, said she used to be able to buy a head of cattle for RM2,500 but its price has since shot up to RM4,000. "The price goes up every year, but the increase this year was very steep," said another consumer, Halimah Zainal Abidin. Meanwhile, cattle breeders have cited higher operating costs as the main factor driving the price hike. Mohd Salehuddin Mohd Razali said a large-size cow was being sold for RM6,000 although it cost RM3,000 last year. He added that the implementation of government and services tax (GST) was also another factor. Aznan Abdul Rahaman, who runs livestock-importing business, said that the Ringgit's drop also contributed to the higher price. It cost RM4,000 this year for an imported cow from Thailand compared to RM2,500 last year, he shared.
