'Rich' beggars earn up to RM1,000 per day in KL

Dressed in baju kurung and shabby tudung, two sisters in their 60s, managed to rake in RM1,000 per day just by begging in the streets of Kuala Lumpur. The duo were among eight "rich beggars" arrested by the Federal Territory Islamic Affairs Department (Jawi) and the Social Welfare Department in a special operation at Jalan Masjid India and Jalan Tun Perak in Kuala Lumpur."We come here (Kuala Lumpur) once a year during the month of Ramadan because we could get up to RM1,000. We've been doing this for five years," said one of them. It is understood that they took a bus and travelled some 400 km from Johor. "People like to donate when they are shopping, they would give us handout. People are generous in the fasting month," one of them said. The beggars even rented a room in a budget hotel nearby and had planned to beg until the end of the fasting month. "We live together in Johor and the children already have their own family. They do give us money, but this is extra money for us," she said.

> No need to separate solid waste into different colours rubbish bags

It is unnecessary to use colour plastic bag to separate rubbish when the mandatory solid waste separation programme starts in September. Solid Waste Corporation (SWCorp) chief executive officer Datuk Ab Rahim Mohd Nor said people are only required to separate recyclable and non-recyclable waste into different bags. However, they are encouraged to use translucent plastic bags to allow the solid waste management concessionaires to easily check the materials inside. The programme, to promote a healthier and cleaner environment, is to start in six states — Johor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perlis and Kedah — and the Federal Territory.

> Sia not undergoing plastic surgery

Malaysian actor Melvin Sia allegedly underwent plastic surgery as he looks different now, Oriental Daily reported. Sia’s manager, however, denied the speculation and said Sia had merely lost weight. The manager said Sia, now based in Taiwan, had lost 8kg after starting his career there a few years ago. “He also does a lot exercise to maintain his physique,” the manager said.
