> Student almost blinded after being caned
A Form One student of a boarding school in Ipoh was nearly blinded and had to have eye surgery after he was caned by his teacher for breaking a minor rule. The 13-year-old victim was punished for not keeping his clothes in the closet during a random spot check conducted by the teacher. The lens of his spectacles broke, allegedly due to the teacher's caning, and the broken pieces of glass injured his left eye. Doctor said the boy had to have surgery to repair two tears in his left eye. His father said the teacher had already apologised for causing hurt to his son. A report was lodged at the Teluk Intan police station and the case has been referred to the central Perak district police headquarters.
