TRADE negotiations have long centred on the rules of global commerce. Under US President Donald Trump, however, the deals have taken a sharper edge – parti­cularly around energy.

Countries are now pledging to buy vast amounts of American fossil fuels, often years ahead, regardless of whether their economies will need it or whether the United States can deliver.
