The war for Ukraine’s culture

IT looks like a serene snapshot from Ukraine’s battlefield: a group of armour-clad soldiers huddled around a makeshift table scattered with food and playing cards. Some laugh or smoke, while one lounges on the ground, smiling as he scrolls through his phone.

Unlike other images from the Ukrainian front, this photograph lacks the chaos of cannon fire, soldiers climbing out of trenches or wounded fighters grimacing in pain.
