FOR many months now, political parties, incumbent state and federal representatives as well as possible future candidates have been buzzing about the 15th General Election (GE15).
Party leaders are rushing to get their election machinery ready. In some places, party members and volunteers have already started canvassing voters in their communities.
Then there are the courtings and dealings among the political players to determine who will actually get to stand in GE15.
Amidst all this, however, what about the people?
Do the YBs and future YBs really know about the rakyat’s concerns, hopes and wishes?
The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has impacted everyone’s life and many are still reeling from the political upheavals since GE14 in 2018.
Ultimately, many are tired of unfulfilled promises and demand that the political players take heed of what the rakyat want.
To help the rakyat voice this out, leading local mainstream media outlets The Star, Sinar Harian, Astro Awani, Sin Chew Daily and Malaysia Nanban joined forces to gather their thoughts and feelings ahead of the polls. The unprecedented move sees five multilingual, multiplatform media organisations collaborating with three research firms – Ilham Centre, O2 Research and Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies – to conduct a mega survey titled “Suara Rakyat Malaysia Menuju PRU15” (Malaysian Voices: On the Road to GE15).
The survey will be conducted online and via face-to-face interviews by the three research firms until Oct 9 and the results will be published later this month.
In the meantime, the five media organisations have also spoken to people on the street about what their hopes and expectations for GE15 are, and what they look for in a political leader.
Here are some of the hopes and expectations of Malaysians:
