BRITISH prime minister Margaret Thatcher once warned, “Standing in the middle of the road is very dangerous; you get knocked down by the traffic from both sides.”

True to her word, for more than a decade the “Iron Lady” hewed to her stern right-wing side of the road and bulldozed her way through labour unions, state-owned enterprises, and any trace of social democratic politics in Britain.
