Time is running out for Asean to act on Myanmar

Little impact: People in Myanmar are angry and cynical about the effectiveness of organisations such as the United Nations and Asean, said academic Dr Moe Thuzar at the ANN webinar. — Reuters

THE window for Asean to take effective action in addressing the ongoing political tumult in Myanmar is increasingly narrowing, say former Asean diplomats and regional experts, as the coup d'etat by the military junta against a civilian government approaches its sixth month.

Asean leaders had met in Jakarta on April 24 to put pressure on the junta leader Min Aung Hlaing (pic below) to end the violence and de-escalate tensions. However, the military government has instead tightened their grip further on the country, with increased fighting between the opposing sides.
