Promoting access to career guidance, network support for regional youth

Everyone talks about youth impact, but are young people truly being given the resources to create it?

In the Asean region alone, the unemployment rate of those aged between 15 and 24 stood at 12.8% last year, but behind this World Bank figure are barriers that prevent young individuals from turning ideas into action, the most pressing of which is the lack of access to quality career guidance.

As the job market grows increasingly competitive, quality career guidance is often available only to those who can afford it, leaving many talented students behind, according to The Young SEAkers (TYS), a non-profit organisation (NPO) comprising Asean youth leaders who are passionate about advancing East Asia’s economic growth corridor.

Looking to make a positive change, TYS, in a press release dated Sept 9, is calling for vibrant youth to join the organisation to turn things around.

TYS (Malaysia Chapter) leader Ng Peng Han said the organisation is always looking for students who want to be part of this movement, to both benefit from and contribute to the community.

“I have seen firsthand how our programmes empower students to take charge of their careers, not just through resources but also through a supportive network that grows with them.

“Together, we believe every young person deserves the chance to shape their own future.

“At TYS, we are not just building careers, we are also building a generation ready to lead Asean forward,” he said, adding that TYS aims to equip university students with the skills, resources and networks they need to thrive.

With over 1,500 members across South-East Asia, TYS has grown into a community dedicated to connecting future generations of Asean youth with opportunities within the region and beyond.

At the heart of its initiatives is the TYS Career Resources Repository, a free, centralised hub providing industry-level presentation decks, reports and frameworks.

Too often, young people are expected to make life-changing decisions while still figuring out the world.

The right information does not remove the difficulty of those choices, but it makes them far easier.

Designed to help students excel in competitions, prepare for interviews, and understand workplace standards, the initiative combines skill-building, mentorship and career support to help graduates secure positions aligned with their aspirations.

With a presence in all 10 Asean countries, TYS is the first and only South-East-Asia-based NPO with a unique Asean and China focus.

Through its programmes, TYS aims to explore opportunities for Asean youth in East Asia, foster leadership and professional development, enhance cross-cultural competencies and regional awareness, and build strong, lasting relationships among youth leaders.
