New scholarship for SEA

Australian Catholic University (ACU) has launched a new scholarship programme to enable high-achieving students from South-East Asia to pursue their studies at the institution.

The Executive Dean’s International Scholarship will financially support outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students from across the region to study at ACU starting next year.

Designed to make study more affordable for international students, the merit-based scholarship combines tuition support, travel, relocation and visa fees. It will be open to students from Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Timor Leste who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

ACU vice-chancellor and president Prof Zlatko Skrbis said the scholarships reflected the university’s commitment to accessible education and contribution to the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

“South-East Asia is a powerhouse region that is home to a generation of ambitious young people.

“ACU is committed to investing in the future leaders who will help strengthen the ties between our countries and apply their knowledge and expertise to the big issues that impact the region,” Prof Skrbis said in a press release dated Sept 3.

This scholarship is the first of its kind at ACU and reflects the university’s deepening ties with South-East Asia through its student body, alumni, research and partnerships, the statement added.

ACU currently has more than 700 students from South-East Asia enrolled across its seven Australian campuses, the majority of whom are undertaking health and education degrees.

Meantepy Hoeung, a graduate of ACU’s Faculty of Health Sciences and recipient of the Victorian International Student of the Year award, said the university has been instrumental in helping students from the region make an impact in their fields.

“I have always dreamt of working in a field where I can help save lives, bring happiness to individuals and families, and comfort those in need.

“I would encourage everyone to take the leap and pursue their educational dreams in Australia because this is the place where the possibilities for growth, success and personal development are endless,” Hoeung, who left her home in Cambodia to study at ACU, said.
