How to get better at English

Students can improve their English proficiency by being proactive.

As a former teacher and principal, I would like to propose some effective strategies based on my own experiences and observations:

> Read: Regularly reading books, articles, magazines and newspapers in English can help students build vocabulary, understand grammar structures, and familiarise themselves with various writing styles. Start with simple texts and gradually move on to more complex material.

> Listen: Podcasts, audiobooks, movies, TV shows and YouTube videos help with understanding pronunciation, intonation and informal expressions.

> Write daily: Writing journals, essays or even short stories can improve grammar, sentence structure and coherence.

> Speak: Engaging with others in English is essential for fluency. Find language exchange partners, participate in conversation clubs, or talk to yourself to be more articulate and confident.

> Expand vocabulary: Keeping a personal vocabulary journal and noting down new words encountered during reading or listening exercises helps retain and apply new vocabulary more effectively.

From classroom to courtroom

> Learn grammar rules: While practical usage is key, having a basic understanding of grammar helps you to structure sentences correctly. There are many online resources and textbooks to help improve grammar.

> Consume native content: Content created by native speakers allows students to absorb natural language use, slang, idioms and phrasal verbs, all of which are important for advanced language skills.

> Set goals and track progress: Setting clear, measurable language learning goals, like learning 10 new words a day or writing a 200-word essay weekly, helps maintain motivation and track improvement over time.

Consistency is key in any language learning process, so regular practice of reading, writing, speaking and listening will lead to steady progress.
