The English Speaking Union of Malaysia (ESU Malaysia)-Taylor’s Essay Writing Competition 2024 is calling for participants.

ESU Malaysia chairman Tunku Dara Tunku Tan Sri Naquiah Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar said English is a global language that all Malaysians must master in order to compete in this borderless world.

“This must start with the young. They need to learn to write well and communicate effectively to be prepared for the working world.

“By organising this essay competition, we are encouraging and helping them to improve their English writing skills,” she said in a press release dated Oct 17.

The competition was launched during the ESU Malaysia “Afternoon Tea Talk” featuring former Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim at the Royal Selangor Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur, recently.

Rais, who has served under nine prime ministers of Malaysia since 1974 and is the founder of Yayasan Budi, spoke on the topic “In the Era of 10 PMs”.

“I’ve seen firsthand how leadership and vision have shaped the country.

“Each administration I’ve served brought unique challenges and opportunities, but the one constant has always been the need for unity – something that multilingualism can help us achieve by ensuring everyone has a voice and a shared understanding,” he said.

Over 60 ESU Malaysia members attended the event, where Taylor’s College campus director Josephine Tan presented a RM10,000 contribution to Tunku Dara in support of educational development and fostering young talent and communication skills in English in Malaysia.
