A PIONEERING solution to muscle weakness among seniors bore fruit for a trio from Universiti Malaya when the team was crowned champion and “Best Team” at the recent Health iPhAMA-thon 2024 innovation competition.

Recognising the significant burden placed on healthcare systems due to falls resulting from muscle weakness, Team AgeGracer, comprising Catherine Seow from the Faculty of Engineering, and Lim Kai Shi and Mok Xin Hui from the Faculty of Medicine, developed ReMo (Reset Your Movement).

The prototype seamlessly integrates electrical muscle stimulation and electromyogram into a compact, user-friendly device, complemented by a smartphone app, to stimulate users while they are exercising and to measure muscle strength to track health improvements.

This, the team said in a press release, has been scientifically proven to speed up muscle gain.

“The prototype is still underdeveloped. We are seeking collaborators and funders to develop the product which we hope will benefit the country’s ageing society,” they said in a press release.

Organised by Digital A plus Healthcare and the Pharmaceutical Association of Malaysia, the Health iPhAMA-thon was themed “Advancement in Ageing and its Related Research”.

A total of 20 teams had pitched their projects but only eight were selected for the final round of the nationwide competition held on March 3 in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

AgeGracer received a cash prize totalling RM11,000 for their effort.
