Kieran Matthew Gon Jian Ren, Darwish Hakim Nazari, Chen Joon Er, Ali Javaid and Timothy Lee Weng Jee from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) eSports Club did the varsity proud recently when they were crowned champions of the inaugural Campus Legends Malaysia 2023 tournament.
Calling themselves Team Valorant, the five followed this achievement with a second-place finish in the Campus Legends MY/SG/PH Regional 2023 tournament.
Organised by the Singapore Cybersports and Online Gaming Association (SCOGA), the tournament was aimed at identifying and celebrating emerging talents in the realm of competitive gaming.
Team Valorant started their journey during the national category of Campus Legends Malaysia 2023 in December, navigating their way through intense competition from institutions across the nation.
Led and managed by BSc (Hons) in Computer Science student Sattish Pratap Shewkani, the team’s win at the national level competition earned them the opportunity to represent Malaysia in the Regional Grand Finals held on Dec 3, where they competed against their peers from Singapore and the Philippines.
APU eSports Club lecturer- adviser Matthew Wee Ann Poh said the team showcased exceptional skill and deter- mination, securing first place in the national-level challenge without losing a single match against other Malaysian varsities.
The significance of this achievement was built by the strong foundation laid at APU, a press release from the varsity read. In mid-2023, the Higher Education Ministry appointed APU as the first esports-focused sports centre programme coordinator, awarding the varsity a grant fund of RM100,000 for 2023 to 2025.
The recognition positioned APU as a pioneer in fostering a supportive environment for students interested in esports, aligning with the university’s commitment to providing quality education.
