Scholars embark on tertiary journey at UTAR

Emmanuel Joe: This scholarship is a vote of confidence in my potential.

A TOTAL of 876 students from 305 schools are proudly pursuing their tertiary education at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) after being awarded scholarships for the varsity’s recent October intake.

The scholarship presentation ceremonies were held on Nov 20 at its Sungai Long Campus and on Nov 27 at its Kampar Campus.

UTAR president Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat said the scholarships were not only a reward for their diligent efforts, but also a responsibility to leverage their education for positive societal impact.

“We hope the recipients will be inspired to continue their educational journey, maintaining a focus on academic excellence and giving their best for a fulfilling university education and experience.

“Success is measured by the positive impact one has on others. We encourage the students to contribute their efforts in their chosen fields.

“By doing so, we hope that they will treat it as a way of learning and contributing to society,” he said in a press release.

He said as of October 2023, UTAR had awarded over RM190mil in internal scholarships and over RM15.3mil in internal loans to more than 20,000 students.

“UTAR receives proposals from external donors to provide zero-interest loans for students.

“Most of the time, the donors expect only kindness from the recipients, wishing them to have a worry-free education experience without financial burdens. “As a university by the people and for the people, UTAR shares the same wishes as the donors. We hope the recipients will remember the assistance received from the donors.

“Hopefully, when you are successful in your careers, you will also consider contributing back to society and helping others in your own ways,” he said.Foundation in Arts student Disney Quah, who received the UTAR Scholarship for Top Achievers, said the scholarship is not only about funding, but also about hard work, dedication, and giving back to society.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and pledge to make the best of it. Thank you, UTAR, for believing in us.”Bachelor of Science (Hons) Quantity Surveying student Yeo Dun Sheng, who is a recipient of the Yayasan Gamuda Scholarship, said the award will motivate him to achieve his personal and career goals.

Foundation in Science student Miki Ikoma said the UTAR Scholarship for Top Achievers has given her a fresh perspective on pursuing her educational aspirations. “I am determined to discover my full potential and value in life,” she said.

Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) in Logistics and Supply Chain Management student Emmanuel Joe Stephen Ravi Sankar, who is also a recipient of the Yayasan Gamuda Scholarship, described receiving the scholarship as an indescribable moment for him.

“The flood of emotions, from joy and gratitude to a profound sense of responsibility, is something I will carry with me throughout my academic journey. “This scholarship is a vote of confidence in my potential. It has empowered me to fully engage in my academic pursuits without burden from financial constraints, and allowed me to focus on enriching my skills and knowledge.”
