Sarawak-Oxbridge connection

Chase your dreams: Hu sharing her experience with attendees.

Oxford, Cambridge alumni inspire Kuching students to aim high

THE journey to Oxford or Cambridge may seem daunting, but it is an achievable and incredibly rewarding dream.

Highlighting the many success stories of Sarawakians who pursued an education at these Ivy League universities, Oxford alumna Alice Hu, who said she was proud to help open doors for the next generation, shared how perseverance and initiative can lead to great accomplishments.

Assistance offered by current students through the Oxford University Malaysia Club (OUMC) and the Cambridge University Malaysian Society (CUMaS), she said, reinforces the sense of community and support available to students from East Malaysia.

She was speaking at “The Sarawak Connection: Coffee Table Insights”, an event organised by Oxford and Cambridge alumni in Kuching in collaboration with the Malaysian British Educational Cooperation Services (Mabecs), to provide a platform for graduates of these prestigious universities to share their personal journeys, insights into the application and interview processes, and the academic support they received during their years of study, with young Sarawakians.

Sharing his insights, Jordan Kho, Cambridge alumnus and International Council of Malaysian Scholars (ICMS) senator, said anyone can make it to Oxbridge.

“It is important to seize the opportunity and not write yourself off before even applying,” he said via video during the event.

Held on Nov 25, the event saw the participation of some 20 postgraduates, as well as students from private and public schools, and universities.

The attendees were able to engage in networking opportunities, and connect with alumni members who had successfully navigated the academic landscapes of these prestigious universities.

Other alumni members present were Dr Xavier Sim Yoon Han, Chen Chian Ning, Faisal Zaidin and Dr Franca Cole from Cambridge, and Raymond Fong, who graduated from Oxford.

With the success of the inaugural gathering, the alumni are looking to create similar gatherings to encourage young talents to aim higher and unlock their full potential, a press release read.
