‘Sufficient talent for leadership posts’

THE Education Ministry has always forecast the need for principals and school heads, and identified qualified officers to follow the National Professional Qualification for Educational Leaders (NPQEL) in order to provide a sufficient talent pool of school leaders, the Dewan Negara was told on June 26.

Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying said as of June this year, there were 18 vacancies for principal positions in Sarawak.

“Of these, nine vacancies will be filled by acting candidates who have been raised for the consideration of the Public Service Department. The remaining nine vacancies will be filled by suitable NPQEL graduates in the near future,” she said.

She added that the state also had 114 vacancies for school heads.

“Of these, 24 candidates have been identified by the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN) to be appointed as school heads. The remaining 90 vacancies will be filled by suitable NPQEL graduates,” she said in reply to Senator Ahmad Datuk Sri Ibrahim, who wanted to know the Education Ministry’s decision on the school head and principal vacancies in some schools in Sarawak.

The ministry, said Lim, takes other factors into account in order to fill the candidate vacancies, such as the geographical locations of the schools, as well as the talent and potential of candidates who will be placed in schools in some districts that have critical vacancies.

“JPN Sarawak has also taken the initiative to propose candidates from nearby districts to fill vacancies in districts where there are no NPQEL graduates.

“In addition, it has held briefings and promoted the NPQEL programme to attract the interest of senior assistant teachers, especially from the respective districts, to follow the course to prepare themselves to become school heads,” she said. — By JAAYNE JEEVITA
