THE Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Malaysia Alumni Association (PAUiTM) is calling for the appointment of the varsity’s vice-chancellor to be made soon.
PAUiTM secretary Shukri Ishak said Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohd Azraai Kassim, 63, retired as UiTM vice-chancellor on March 10.
UiTM deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international) Prof Dr Roziah Janor has been the acting vice-chancellor since March 19, the varsity told StarEdu.
Shukri said this is the first time a woman is helming the varsity.
“A stringent, merit-based selection process was carried out by the UiTM vice-chancellor promotion interview special committee chaired by UiTM pro-chancellor Tan Sri Zarinah Sameehah Anwar before a recommendation was made to the former higher education minister.
“This decision allowed UiTM to plan and execute strategies more effectively and is in line with the government’s aspiration for greater participation of women in the country’s decision making process,” he said in a statement on Aug 12.
He said PAUiTM hopes a vice-chancellor will be named soon as the varsity’s leadership must be given time to galvanise UiTM’s 35 campuses, 18,000 staff, 172,000 students and over 900,000 alumni.
“Having Prof Roziah serve alongside UiTM chairman Tan Sri Ibrahim Shah Abu Shah will bring the varsity to greater heights,” he added.
