MALAYSIA’s first Green Real Estate (GreenRE) Platinum-certified school is set to open in January 2023.

Sunway Education Group chief executive officer Prof Elizabeth Lee said the new seven-acre Sunway International School (SIS) Kuala Lumpur campus meets the green certification requirements in a tropical setting set out by the Malaysian-developed building rating tool.

Prof Lee also said the high-tech, purpose-built 28,200 square metre campus located in USJ Subang Jaya is optimised for student learning and holistic development, and can accommodate up to 3,000 students.

She pointed out that at SIS, students don’t just learn.

“They get to experience, interact, work together and engage with others from different backgrounds and different cultures.”

She added that SIS is also the only Canadian and International Baccalaureate School in Malaysia.

“From a total of 25 students when we started out in 2008, we now have over 1,000 students in our two campuses in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur and Sunway Iskandar Johor,” she said when delivering her keynote speech during a virtual preview of the new school on July 7.

At the preview, High Commission of Canada in Malaysia acting senior trade commissioner Thomas Abols said this is the only school in Malaysia licensed by the Ministry of Education Ontario, Canada, to offer credits leading up to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

The OSSD is a widely accepted qualification for post-secondary education, he added.

SIS executive director Dr Cheng Mien Wee said the new campus will now see primary pupils joining its student body.

She added that students are taught to be socially-conscious, caring individuals as Grades Nine to 12 students are required to complete 40 hours of community service.

She also said the semester-based programmes, which focus on four subjects per semester, allow for longer contact hours between teachers and students. The new campus will conduct programmes for Primary School (Grades One to Five), Middle School (Grades Six to Eight) and High School (Grades Nine to 11) according to the Canadian (Ontario) curriculum, and Pre-University (Grades 11 and 12) according to International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

In celebration of its inaugural intake, Sunway Education Group will be presenting bursaries worth RM15,000 for Primary School enrolments by June 2022, and bursaries worth RM10,000 for enrolments by December 2022.

Middle School, High School and Pre-University enrolments by December 2022 will receive bursaries worth RM3,000.

The curriculum in SIS is taught by qualified teachers who are licensed by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), a professional body that governs and regulates the Ontario teaching profession.

Enrolment has begun.
