Lower fees for UM students

Less cost: UM has decided to reduce its services fees.

UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) is reducing its services fees in light of the conditional movement control order (MCO).

UM, which has been conducting all teaching and learning activities online since the second semester for the Session 2019/2020, announced that over 22,000 selected local and international students would be given a fee reduction of RM120 per semester.

“In the interest of our students’ welfare, UM, through the Bantuan UM Prihatin initiative has decided that a reduction of the University Services Fee of RM120 per semester will be given to local and international students for three semesters, namely Semester 2, Session 2019/2020 and Semesters 1 and 2, Session 2020/2020,” it said in a statement.

This would include the Sports and Recreation, Library, ICT and Health/Welfare fees.

Overall, the fee reduction will amount to approximately RM2.7mil for each semester.

This is one of 11 initiatives under the Bantuan UM Prihatin initiative which has been in place since the first nationwide MCO that began on March 18, 2020.

The 11 services under Bantuan UM Prihatin which are aimed to help students, include the service fee reduction, refund of accommodation fees for students not living on campus, provision of needy students with Celcom data plans, provision of UM Lodging Scholarships worth RM600 to 615 students, UM Meal Scholarships worth RM1,800 to 921 students, and special MCO zakat worth RM700.

Meanwhile, UM is allowing selected postgraduate and off-campus students to return to campus during office hours, subject to their department head’s approval.

“Postgraduate students of research mode who are required to resume their research and be physically present at laboratories, workshops, design studios or are required to use specialised equipment to conduct their research can return to campus.“Off-campus students who do not have sufficient Internet access or a conducive environment and need to use campus infrastructure for online lessons are welcomed to return to campus as well.”

UM added that students should comply with the relevant health and safety standard operating procedures at all times.
