Student creates free app for SPM revision

Yong Xun created the app to give students an alternative option to study anywhere and anytime, without having to lug their thick revision books wherever they go.

SEEKING to make revising and learning easier for Forms Four and Five students, a 20-year-old student created an app called JomStudy.

Understanding the struggles of lugging heavy revision books and textbooks around, Ong Yong Xun wants to provide an alternative option for students, where they can study anywhere and anytime.

The idea struck him when he was a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate three years ago.

“I felt the need to have more condensed and convenient materials and methods of revising for the exam.

“My tuition classes used to be at night. I’d often only have the time to revise my notes during the car rides to the centre.

“Once, I did not want to switch on the torchlight on my handphone to read my bulky notes because of the chances of getting a headache.

“It was then that I thought, why wasn’t there an app for students to revise on-the-go, with functions like ‘reading mode’ to avoid motion sickness?” he told StarEdu.

Once he completed his Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), he spent about a month learning coding to develop the app.

A one-man army, it took Yong Xun, who plans to study actuarial science in Sunway University, six months to launch JomStudy which contains exercises from 16 Form Five subjects.

The app currently contains features such as revision notes.

Soon, Yong Xun will be adding more features to it, such as multiple choice questions and past year questions.

He’s currently on the search for teachers to be a part of his app to create multiple choice questions, in his bid to continue providing a free learning tool to students.

Interested teachers can contact him at jomstudyservice@gmail.com.

The app can be downloaded for free on PlayStore and AppStore.
