Everything a medical college should offer

MEDICINE and dentistry remain popular career choices for young Malaysians leaving high school today. While a career choice is often an easy one to make as it is driven by the student’s inert passion and drive, the same cannot be said in choosing an institution at which a student can pursue his studies for this chosen field.

Proven track record

With over three dozen medical schools in Malaysia to choose from, Melaka-Manipal Medical College is miles ahead as a top medical school. Since its inception, over 4,000 medical and over 200 dental surgeons have been delivered to the Malaysian and overseas international health systems, with many of its alumni members progressing successfully onto specialist careers of their choosing.

Future-ready Skills

With all other careers today, its days of being an iron-clad rice bowl career option is no longer true. This is why Melaka-Manipal focuses on delivering a knowledge-plus programme that is benchmarked against WHO’s recommended curriculum.

Building on this foundation, Melaka-Manipal also provides its students with opportunities to have a true-taste of the working life by presenting its MBBS final semester students with a simulated semester based on the housemanship structure. As such, students graduating with this experience are better positioned to do well during their housemanship years as they have had a taste of the expectations and are ready to confidentyly rise to the challenge.

For Melaka-Manipal’s dental students, the opportunity to perfect their clinical skills in Melaka-Manipal’s very own on-campus dental clinic allows them to build mastery on procedures in all dentistry disciplines. With a student-dental chair ratio of almost 1:1, coupled with a patient pool of over 30,000 per year, students are not short of opportunities to develop and fine-tune their dental skills under the watchful eyes of experienced lecturers and professors from the industry.

Clear pathway

For fresh SPM school-leavers, a pathway programme is provided via the Foundation in Science. A uniquely designed 12-month programme, students are prepared to excel in MBBS or BDS as subjects are specifically chosen to deepen a student’s existing science knowledge so that they have a solid head start in their later years of undergraduate studies. Exposure to pre-clinical subjects of Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry ensures students are ready for their journey ahead as a #FutureDoctor and #FutureDentist. Students in the foundation programme who meet entry requirements are given assured progression into either the MBBS or BDS programmes.

Lifelong learning support

It is impressed upon Melaka-Manipal Medical College students upon graduation that they have just stepped on the first rung of the medical profession. As the oft-wrought cliché goes, learning is lifelong and no less true is this in the medical field. In a future where technology dictates though, those skills that are distinctly human will be among the most valuable, and it is these skills that are enriched through postgraduate study. Considering how vital this is, Melaka-Manipal organises workshops for USMLE, PLAB and various Royal College fellowship exams at its campus in Melaka, so its students are able to prepare for them prior to graduation with minimal travel involved from their on-going routine.

Students are also exposed to the various aspects of the profession, outside of the clinical setting to ensure that all career options within the field are opened to them. These includes being a healthcare professional in a civil setting, in a corporate setting as well as in an academia setting.

Balanced lifestyle

Since its inception, MMMC has successfully integrated the Manipal ethos into its Malaysian curriculum, faculty and students. The facilities in both the Manipal and Melaka campuses are second to none in that they fully provide for holistic education, academic as well as social. In Manipal, students can join clubs for music and fine arts, enjoy literary pursuits, meditation, yoga, debating, photography and language classes. In addition, the campus has playgrounds and courts for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball, as well as swimming pools, gyms and athletics track.

The pursuit of medicine or dentistry is a marathon, not a sprint. As such, parents and students are invited to visit Melaka-Manipal Medical College and experience for themselves life as a future Manipalite.
