ACCORDING to research, in the UK alone, the demand for engineers is expected to fill a benchmark income of £27bil (RM144.3bil) per year. In other words, engineering companies will require up to 182,000 engineers per year and there is currently an annual shortfall of 55,000 skilled engineering professionals. On a global scale, it is estimated that in 2020 alone, two million jobs in engineering related fields will need to be filled.
For a young school-leaver, making the decision to pursue a future in engineering can be daunting. At the University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM), the chance to be less intimidated by big life choices comes with hands-on workshops by academics with decades of experience.
Gain a once-in-a-lifetime experience - UoSM is set to hold its next Open Days on the March 14 and 21 at its campus located in the EduCity development in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. The Open Days will take place between 9.30am and 2.30pm to give prospective students an inside look at what it is like to study engineering.
Being the only foreign branch campus in Malaysia to offer split campus engineering programmes, UoSM students spend two years in Malaysia followed by two years in the UK. This also paves the way for an education at a Global Top 100 University (QS World University Rankings 2020) at only 62% of the cost of completing the full degree in the UK. Although currently based in EduCity Iskandar, UoSM will be expanding to a new campus in 2021 located within EcoWorld Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
The university is ranked fourth in the UK for Mechanical Engineering (The Complete University Guide, 2020), sixth in the UK for Aeronautics and Astronautics and third in the UK for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2020).
UoSM will also be expanding its programme portfolio to include finance and accounting, computer science and business management.
Participants of the upcoming Open Days will be privy to workshops and talks that will cover a variety of topics. Some of the workshops that will be held include a flight simulator workshop, a virtual reality workshop, an electric car-making workshop and a workshop on the generation of power through a water vortex. There will also be the opportunity to meet the accomplished academics, alumni and some of UoSM’s award-winning students. Additionally, there will be accommodation tours for those who wish to explore the student lifestyle at UoSM.
Up to 100% scholarships are available with up to RM 2,500 Early Bird Discounts and 0% application fees. The university has also newly launched two additional scholarships for UEC students - the Young Engineer Entrance Scholarships worth RM 3,500 and Young Engineer Study Grants worth RM1,500 for tuition fees.
