FORMER Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) president Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Chuah Hean Teik has been awarded the 2019 World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) Medal of Excellence in Engineering Education.

He received the medal at the WFEO gala dinner held in conjunction with the World Engineers Convention (WEC) Australia 2019 held in Melbourne last month.

This Medal of Excellence was presented to Chuah to honour his contributions and services in both the academia and the engineering profession.

His leadership has led to many initiatives and inspired those around him. Chuah’s career and achievements in engineering, not just within the country but also regionally and internationally, have earned him much respect from many in the profession and the industry. He is also a technical leader with vast expertise and scholarly achievements.

As an engineer and educator, Chuah has reached out to many communities far and wide and contributed his expertise in many engineering boards, accreditation bodies and professional organisations including government agencies.

He conducted many training sessions in outcome-based engineering education in various countries such as Nigeria, Rwanda, Cambodia, China, the Philippines and Myanmar. He has also helped countries such as Myanmar, Rwanda, Nigeria and Cambodia to establish their engineering accreditation systems.

He was recently awarded FEIAP Engineer of the Year 2019, a prestigious regional award, which is a testimony of his contributions in helping many developing countries in Asia, the Pacific and Africa.

The WFEO Medal of Excellence in Engineering Education was created in Madrid, in November 1999, during the 18th General Assembly of WFEO.

The recipient of the award is chosen based on his or her noteworthy contributions to the improvement of engineering education. Special consideration is given to outstanding services rendered by educators to engineering educational institutions and to those involved in the education of engineers.

The WFEO Awards Committee makes its recommendation on award recipients to the WFEO Executive Council for ratification.
