MEDICINE and dentistry are still a hot career choice for young Malaysians leaving high school today.
While often an easy career choice to make, driven by the student’s inert passion and drive, the same often cannot be said in choosing the institution to pursue studies for these chosen fields.
Proven track record
With over three dozen medical schools in Malaysia to choose from, Melaka-Manipal Medical College (MMMC) is miles ahead as a top medical school.
Since its inception, over 4, 000 graduates have since joined the medical field, while over 200 graduates have gone to become dental surgeons in Malaysia and overseas.
Many alumni members are also progressing successfully into specialist careers of their choosing.
International and global exposure
Melaka-Manipal’s twinning degree programmes for medicine and dentistry are designed for students to complete pre-clinical training in the Manipal campus in India in 2½ years before returning to hone their clinical skills in Malaysia.
The MOH hospitals in Melaka, Muar, Jasin, Segamat and government polyclinics provide the settings for the clinical skills training.
Meanwhile, dentistry students can perfect their clinical skills in Melaka-Manipal’s very own on-campus dental clinic, which offers training in all disciplines within dentistry.
With a student-dental chair ratio of almost 1:1, coupled with a patient-pool of over 30, 000 per year, students are not short of opportunities to develop and fine-tune their dental skills under the watchful eyes of highly experienced lecturers and professors from the industry.
Solid head start
For fresh SPM school-leavers, a pathway programme is provided via the Foundation in Science.
This uniquely designed 12month programme prepares students to excel in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Surgery as subjects are specifically chosen to deepen students’ existing knowledge to give them a strong head start in their undergraduate studies.
Students who meet the entry requirements are given assured progression into either programme.
Lifelong learning support
It is impressed on students upon graduation that they have just stepped on the first rung of the medical profession.
As the oft-wrought cliché goes, learning is lifelong – no less true is this in the medical arena.
However, in a future where technology dictates, distinct human skills will be among the most valuable and need to be developed through postgraduate study.
Therefore, Melaka-Manipal organises workshops for USMLE, PLAB and various royal colleges at its Melaka campus.
Since its inception, MMMC has successfully integrated the Manipal ethos into its Malaysian curriculum, faculty and students.
The facilities in both the Manipal and Melaka campuses also provide holistic education, academic as well as social.
In Manipal, students can join clubs for music and fine arts, enjoy literary pursuits, meditation, yoga, debating, photography and language classes.
The campus also has playgrounds and courts for cricket, hockey, football, tennis, basketball, badminton and volleyball, as well as swimming pools, gyms and athletics track.
The pursuit of medicine or dentistry is a marathon, not a sprint. As such, parents and students are invited to visit Melaka-Manipal Medical College and experience themselves in life as a future Manipalite.
