MSU on the right track

MANAGEMENT and Science University (MSU) has been ranked 541-550 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings in its 2020 edition, positioning the institution among 51% of 1,000 global universities in the list on its first inclusion.

MSU was also awarded Malaysia’s Best Newcomer, making it one of the top 10 universities in the country.

“I am very delighted with what we have achieved on the QS World University rankings, which is a testimony that we are on the right direction to achieving our vision and mission of transforming lives and enriching the future,” said MSU president Prof Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid.

He shared that the various rankings awarded to MSU served as benchmarks while the university strives to meet its goals in building holistic, balanced and well-rounded graduates.

“We always have six major attributes that we are working very hard within the university in order to meet our goals.

“One of the important aspects is the industry-embedded learning and employability component. The university addresses the current issues of the industries, where students get input from lecturers with industrial backgrounds, as it is geared towards preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0),” said Prof Mohd Shukri, adding that the university ensures an employability rate of 98% among its graduates.

The university is also looking into improving its entrepreneurship programmes by continuously creating a sustainable entrepreneur ecosystem, promoting entrepreneurial culture in building leaders.

“We are proud of our progress so far and to further motivate us, MSU has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU), which recognises the social, cultural and economic impact of entrepreneurship, and engagement by the university,” he said.

The third component is the internationalisation of the university.

“The various rankings, including the QS World University, ACEEU and Times Higher Education World University Rankings awarded to MSU, set a benchmark for us, showing that the university is on par with international education standards and acts as an indication that we are doing it right.

“In the same manner, we are pushing our university in its mobility programme and supporting all global mobility programme students such as the Global Leadership Programme and Global Internship Programme.

“We also ensure that 50% of our lecturers across faculties are international.

“I believe that if we could be equivalent to international standards, we could support the Government’s vision in making our country an education hub,” he said.

Currently, MSU has three offshore campuses – in Bangalore, Colombo and Indonesia. The university is targeting a total of 10 offshore campuses within the next five years.

Another component that MSU is continuously looking into is in the area of community engagement and sustainability programmes, which is something very close to its heart.

“We want our students to be involved in such programmes and engagement, which is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

“The efforts and initiatives by the university throughout the years were recognised by the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings 2019 as the top 300 impact universities,” he said.

Research, the fifth component, is the key role to unlock the university’s success and achievements.

As such, MSU is consistently working with its 300 global partners in areas including interdisciplinary research, as well as applied research.

Prof Mohd Shukri said that lifelong learning and flexible education, which is the final important component, is to serve the university’s vision and mission to transform lives and enrich the future.

“Our programmes are very much designed with students’ convenience in mind, so learners could choose from a variety of study modes as well as virtual learning,” he said.

“We feel that the six core focus will lead the university to achieve its vision and mission, and at the same time, improve and benchmark against international education standards,” concluded Prof Mohd Shukri.
