THE Service Learning Malaysia - University for Society (Sulam) programme pioneered by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) will be expanded to other universities and polytechnics in the country.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik said Sulam is an initiative by the ministry that merged the objective of the learning with community service.
“This programme gives the learning experience that links theory and practical with the actual problem solving in the community.
“It also benefits the local residents, like in Pulau Tanjung Surat, with the provision of various facilities and infrastructure through strategic cooperation with the various agencies, such the South East Johor Development Authority (Kejora), KotaTinggi District Office and the Pengerang local government authority,” he said when launching Sulam in Pulau Tanjung Surat, Pengerang last weekend.
Dr Maszlee said the Sulam programme in Pulau Tanjung Surat involved the participation of more than 200 UTM students from various disciplines.
He said the choice of Pulau Tanjung Surat as the venue for the programme was apt because of its uniqueness, adding that the place is rich in history and heritage.
Also present were Higher Education director-general Datin Paduka Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir, UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar and Kota Tinggi district officer Farizal Ismail. - Bernama
