THE medical field has always been a popular profession for students and parents, largely due to the noble values of saving lives, as well as for its stability and rewards. As an academic institution that excels in teaching Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Newcastle University has consistently been one of the most highly regarded medical degrees in the UK with programmes that are confirmed by the UK’s General Medical Council.
It is also a national centre of excellence in biomedical research, ranked within the top 20 in the UK for Biomedical Sciences, according to The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 (Subjects Allied to Medicine category) and top 125 in the Clinical, Pre-clinical and Health category by Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2018.
In 2011, Newcastle University established an international branch campus in Johor that focuses on undergraduate degrees in medicine (MBBS) and biomedical sciences (BSc). It also offers opportunities in foundation and postgraduate studies, all which comply with the university, Malaysian Qualifications Agency and The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education codes of practice.
Called the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia or, simply NUMed, the campus will host an open day on March 16 and 23. Students and parents who are keen to explore the various available options can visit the campus and check out the facilities and amenities there as well.
Building a firm foundation
NUMed’s Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences is a pre-undergraduate programme that is open to Malaysian and international students who wish to study medicine, biological or biomedical sciences, or science as undergraduates in NUMed Malaysia, Newcastle University UK or any other Malaysian higher education institution.
The programme instils students with the intellectual development and subject knowledge for studying medicine or biomedical science subjects and strengthens their use of the English language, which helps them develop confidence in communicating and learning at a degree level.
The course firms up the student’s study skills and provides practical experience of how British universities conduct their instructions. It also encourages them to undertake self-evaluation, which helps when identifying additional needs.
It has only one intake in May each year and awards successful students with the Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences certification, conferred by Newcastle University UK, which automatically confers them a place on either NUMed’s MBBS programme or the 2+1 BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences programme.
Earning honours in a noble profession
The goal of NUMed’s MBBS programme is to mould graduates to become practising doctors who are in accordance with the professional standards set by both the UK General Medical Council and the Malaysian Medical Council.
To that, NUMed aims to deliver an educational experience that has the range, depth and rigour where its students can internalise the knowledge, understanding, practical skills, competencies and professional attitudes required for their initial clinical practice as a pre-registered house officer, well on their way to becoming a medical professional.
The Medicine and Surgery MBBS Honours programme is a fully integrated five-year undergraduate medical course delivered at NUMed’s Iskandar Puteri campus in Johor, although students are given opportunities to transfer to the Newcastle University UK’s medical school in the second and fourth year.
Successful students in this course will be awarded the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees by Newcastle University, UK.
Finding new ways to combat diseases
Biomedical sciences provide a way to fight a wide range of diseases that affect us humans, with new discoveries that help us treat and prevent new mutating infections.
It covers a diverse range of subjects relating to medicine and includes the study of key areas such as biochemistry, genetics, physiology, and more – thus providing a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the functions of the human body in health and disease.
NUMed’s BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences is a 2+1 programme where students will spend their first part of the study in NUMed campus locally for two academic years that mirrors the programme offered in the UK.
They will then spend one academic year in the Newcastle University, UK campus joining a research-led teaching and an intensive research project in important research institutes in Newcastle University Medical School.
Upon successful completion, students are awarded the BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences degree by Newcastle University, UK.
Living, studying in a secure environment
Opened in 2011 by Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, this custom-built 5.5ha secure campus is designed to replicate the look and feel of Newcastle, and comprises over 15,000sqm of academic space housing state-of-the-art facilities and innovations in medical learning and teaching technology.
Its facilities include lecture and seminar rooms, a laboratory and clinical skills complex, the learning resource centre – which is NUMed’s centrepiece, and the student cafeteria and recreation centre.
NUMed provides a safe and conducive environment that supports learning and encourages teamwork. The campus is situated within EduCity in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.
NUMed is now accepting May intake applications for its Foundation in Biological and Biomedical Sciences programme, which leads to its MB BS and BMS undergraduate degree programmes.
Apply now or during the NUMed Open Days on either March 16 or 23.
