THE new year marked an exciting new phase for the International Medical University (IMU), which welcomed new vice-chancellor Prof Abdul Aziz Baba along with several other members of the management team.

Prof Abdul Aziz who is also IMU Education chief executive officer (CEO), served as the university’s vice-president for medical and dental programmes since July 2013.

He takes over from Tan Sri Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman, whose term as CEO ended on Dec 31 last year. Dr Abu Bakar will remain as IMU Health Sdn Bhd president. IMU Health Sdn Bhd is the parent company overseeing IMU Education, IMC Education and IMU Healthcare.

Under Dr Abu Bakar’s leadership for the past 15 years, the university has seen exponential growth and development which included not only the expansion of the medical and dentistry programmes but also health in an integrated and holistic manner.

IMU established the only chiropractic programme in Southeast Asia, Chinese Medicine programmes, as well as the Oral Health Centre and other clinics under IMU Healthcare.

During the handover ceremony, Dr Abu Bakar spoke on the need for the university to look to the future and continue providing excellence in service.

He added that his successor Prof Abdul Aziz would steer the university to greater heights as a niche medical and healthcare university.

Prof Abdul Aziz thanked the management team for entrusting him with this new role.

“I will strive to follow in the footsteps of Tan Sri’s (Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman) remarkable leadership and build upon his successes as I steer IMU Education to the next level of growth and expansion.

“We must produce a future generation of medical and healthcare professionals who are equipped to face the changing landscape and needs of the industry, while nurturing ethical, caring professionals who can deliver safe and effective healthcare services to the community,” he said.
