FROM sexual harrassment and rape to human trafficking and domestic violence, crimes against women are perpetuated by traditional gender roles and unfair stereotypes. Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) advocacy officer Kristine Yap said that, generally, women are seen as weak and compliant, while men are judged to be powerful decision-makers: “The imbalance in gender dynamics can lead to violence within relationships, which manifests in different ways, not just physically.”
Yap was speaking to the crowd of over 350 people at SMK Assunta, Petaling Jaya’s International Understanding Day (IU Day), organised by the school’s Interact Club.
