THE Berjaya group has ventured into the hospitality education sector with the opening of the Berjaya University College of Hospitality (Berjaya UCH) in January.
After being in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, the group decided to establish a niche institution in response to an invitation by the Higher Education Ministry.
There was a need to meet the demands of highly skilled professionals in not only the hotel, but tourism and services management sector, said Berjaya UCH vice-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Abu Hassan Othman.
He said the university, located in the Berjaya Times Square Mall, is “a custom-built city campus”.
Despite the current economic climate, the university college is poised to grow and remain a profitable entity.
“The 1997-98 recession proved a goldmine for local education institutions because students who had intended to further their studies abroad had to choose local alternatives. Berjaya UCH is in the right place at the right time,” added Dr Abu Hassan.
He also noted that the need for re-training, learning of new skills, career-switching and entrepreneurship development related to hospitality, retail businesses and franchising, will result in more interest from prospective students.
The campus, which is equipped with state-of-the art facilities, is Wi-Fi enabled allowing students to fully utilise digital technology to aid learning.
Berjaya UCH currently offers six programmes related to hospitality, tourism and services management namely Foundation in Hospitality, Diploma in Culinary Arts, Diploma in Hospitality Management, Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Tourism Management (Honours).
To give prospective students a taste of the programmes offered, Berjaya UCH will be holding open days over two weekends — March 21 and 22 and March 28 and 29.
There will be workshops on the preparation of savoury and dessert pasta, yogurt making, salad tossing, wine aroma sensing, coffee artistry and a travel ticketing demonstration,
Experienced career consultants will be on hand to discuss and explore career and education pathways.
