THE Wayang Kulit performing group from the Akademi Seni Kebangsaan (ASK) has been invited to stage a series of performances, workshops and lecture demonstrations in New York City from April 26 to May 4.
The performances will be staged at the United Nations Headquarters Hall, the International School of New York, the Malaysian Permanent Mission, The Lighthouse Theatre and New York University.
This opportunity has been made possible through the efforts by ASK, the Culture and Arts Ministry, Heritage Malaysia and sponsorship from The Ladies Association, Tourism Malaysia and the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The Malaysian heritage of shadow plays and the telling of stories inspired by the Ramayana has been encouraged as part of the core modules of study at ASK, since 1994.
The students learn the history and music, while being exposed to the craft of pendalangan or puppeteer.
They are also taught to basics of making the leather puppets and have to perform the wayang kulit as part of their course.
