Road safety drive to ensure safe journey

UNIVERSITI Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Malaysia Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) organised a road safety awareness campaign and exhibition at the campus grounds recently.

SAE-UTM president Sew Chang Wei said the campaign was aimed at creating awareness on road safety among UTM students because many would be going home for the Chinese New Year holidays.

The Road Transport Department taught students the correct way to drive and what measures to take during accidents.

Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM) committee member Fazam Ahmad said he always carried a camera to take pictures of traffic offenders which were then uploaded on www.panducermat.org.my along with their location, date and time.

UTM's Road Safety Awareness campaign was held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

“Hopefully they will drive more carefully in future,” he said.

The laws and restrictions on vehicle modifications was explained by Puspakom during the seminar. Vehicle modifications are legal but vehicle owners need to follow guidelines and inspections set by Puspakom.

The Fire Services Department and traffic police also set up exhibition booths. The students were shown the latest equipment used by the Fire Department.

Hong Leong Yamaha Distributors performed their superb motor driving and balancing skills on the last session of the campaign.

Students were also given a chance to perform the stunts under their supervision.

“I’m sad to see so many people die in road accidents,” said Shahrul Yuzi when conducting the motor performance show.
