DREAMS do come true, at least for students who recently received scholarships from Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad (Great Eastern).

The Great Eastern Supremacy Local Scholarship Awards, totalling more than RM100,000, were given to four students to enable them to pursue their studies at local universities.

They are Lee Chee Sin and Gan Shou Wan, both studying actuarial science at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Edward Lu Kean who is studying economics at Universiti Malaya, and Yuvendran Muniandy pursuing biotechnology at Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

Lu, 20, whose father is a labourer and mother a housewife, said: ”I definitely need this scholarship to achieve my dream as my family’s financial background makes it difficult for me to continue my studies.”

“Thank you so much Great Eastern, for making my dream come true,” he added.

Lu, who scored 4As in his STPM examinations, also thanked his parents for their support and encouragement which had helped him achieve excellent results in his studies.

This is the seventh intake of scholars for Great Eastern which has been awarding scholarships for students to pursue degree courses locally and overseas since 1998.

Besides the Annual Supremacy Local Scholarship Awards for Malaysian universities, Great Eastern also offers two other scholarship awards – the Annual Supremacy Regional Scholarship Awards for studies in approved Chinese universities and the Bi-Annual Supremacy Scholarship Awards for overseas education.

To date, Great Eastern has awarded 43 scholarships – 34 local, five and four overseas, worth more than RM1mil to deserving students. Some of the scholars have completed their studies and started careers with Great Eastern.

“Higher education is not cheap and its cost is escalating. The increase in the cost of a university education is a financial burden for parents. Nevertheless, we believe that lack of finances should not be an obstacle for anyone who wants to pursue their field of interest. That is the reason the Great Eastern Supremacy Scholarship Award was launched,” said Great Eastern director and chief executive officer Alex Foong Soo Hah.

Foong added that the company believes in investing in human resources. The scholarship programme is not only a way to recognise promising youths but also serves as an avenue for Great Eastern to contribute to society as the students who graduate return to serve the nation as future leaders.
