University of Leeds opens office in KL

THE University of Leeds launched its Southeast Asia Regional Office in Kuala Lumpur recently. The launch was attended by alumnus Datuk Dr Mohd Zawawi Ismail and representatives from various educational institutions.

They included Dr Yeow Poh Wha and Dr Rabiah Ghani from the English Language Teaching Centre, Patricia Ong and Lee Fah Onn (Inti College Malaysia) and Gan Bee Bee from the University of Wolverhampton.

The opening of the SEA Office coincides with the university's centenary celebrations this year. The University of Leeds received its Royal Charter in 1904 but its origins date back to the nineteenth century with the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831.

One hundred years ago, the University community had a population of around 1,000. The present campus supports a community of over 40,000, welcoming students from all over the world. Its reputation worldwide makes it a truly multicultural and international institution.

David Baker, the University's International Office Director said that the opening of the University of Leeds SEA Regional Office in KL is a clear demonstration of the University's commitment to internationalisation.

“It also reflects the University's belief that Malaysia is a vital and dynamic hub in the region, an important centre for research and development as well as learning and teaching,'' he said.

Baker commented that the opening of the office also marks an improvement in its service to students as it would be able to give information and advice direct to students in all matters related to applications and life at Leeds.

“The University hopes that the new office will be able to spearhead the development of many more academic linkages at all levels,'' he added.

The new SEA Office is planning a series of information sessions and activities for students over the next few months.

These will include talks on the application process, studying and living in Leeds, subject specific talks and pre departure briefings. The office is open from 10.30am to 7pm weekdays.

The University of Leeds SEA Regional Office is at Suite 5.3, Level 5, Menara Weld, No. 76 Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur. For enquiries, call 03-2031 5330. E-mail: visit
