Giving back to community

MULTI-NATIONAL company BASF Petronas recently contributed RM6,000 towards the Star-NIE School Sponsorship Scheme.

The contribution is for newspapers to be sent to 15 schools in the Kuantan district in a bid to improve the standard of the English Language in schools and at the same time get students to read about the world around them.

The Star newspapers will be sent to these schools on the third Tuesday of every month when there is a complimentary 16-page NiE (Newspaper-in-Education) supplement published.

BASF Petronas Kuantan site director Dr Friedrich Towae said the gesture was part of the company's social obligation to the community in Kuantan.

“When we wanted to place our operations in Asia, we were looking for a friendly country where the people were able to communicate with us. This is our way of saying thanks and we want to contribute in some way to the promotion of the English Language for the future generation,” he said, adding that the company would continue to support the programme in future.

The mock cheque presentation was witnessed by the Pahang state education director Datuk A.Rahim Noh.

Also present at the ceremony, held at the state education department office, were the company's director of human resource management and administration division Suhaila Abdullah; human resource and employee communication senior manager Jason Choi Kam Heng; site public relations senior executive Munatirah Yahaya; and The Star's circulation executive Robin James JR. – BY FARIDAH BEGUM
