For many students, college life is a time of self-expression and individuality. Fashion provides the perfect avenue for sending that message across.

Today, many a student’s monthly allowance includes a shopping budget, some hefty enough to include designer wear.

While some colleges impose dress codes, students still find ways to convey their innate need to simply be themselves, which often means looking “cool”.

But what is college fashion? Is there a specific look or style to be followed? From smart and trendy to hip-hop and funky, student fashion has evolved and knows no creative bounds.

To find out what “look” best appeals to college students, StarEducation is launching a Fashion Poll.

Here we present a collection of college guys and girls in various fashion categories. These pictures of students were taken randomly and are representative of what students wear in college.

Log on to to enter your vote for your favourite guy and girl.

Tell us in no more than 50 words, what you think is the ultimate cool college couture. The 10 most creative entries will receive food vouchers worth RM50 from Pizza Hut. This poll is open to college and university students nationwide till Oct 20.

Hip Hop

Besides Avinaash Nair’s cheeky grin, his spotted bandana andbright yellow T-shirt are certainly hard to miss. This trendy hip-hoppish look complete with baggy blue Delta jeans and Reebok sneakers is a hot favourite among guys in Malaysian colleges. Like most of his friends, the 19-year-old goes for baggy clothes from Extreme, Ecko and Tropicana Life.

An avid rock fan, Wira Ahmad Fauzi, 18, sports a white, long-sleeved top from British India, three-quarter Billabong pants and white Reeboks. With eyebrow and labret piercings, black and red beaded necklace, Wira Ahmad mixes comfort with alternative style.

With a Dada shirt, Fubu pants and Nike rubber shoes, Ranjeev Mancoha, 17, inadvertently achieves a sporty look despite not being fashion-conscious, or so he says. Completing this look is a silver necklace, which he says adds a bit of attitude.

Chong Soon Siew creates a cool look by matching a white-and-blue long-sleeved collared T-shirt and light blue denim jeans from Levi’s, and donning his favourite Adidas sneakers. As for his easy-to-style spiky hair, the 20-year-old claims has been his trademark for the past three years.

Bringing with him a touch of Indonesian culture, Taufan Sony Ericsson, 23, insists on dressing "out of this world", to look one-of-a-kind. Clad in a casual, provocatively-worded RM20 T-shirt from Sungei Wang, a wordy cardigan, batik pants, a pair of 347 Boardnoer & Co sandals purchased from Bandung, and a sling bag from Bali, Taufan believes his clothes and his naturally curly mane represent the real him.

Smart Casual

Twenty-year-old Adi Farhan combines the serious with the rugged for what he calls the "perfect combination" for college wear. Breaking away from the common T-shirt and jeans combo, Adi feels this get-up is both comfortable and presentable. He is seen here wearing a black Esprit collared shirt with rolled-up sleeves to reveal a black semi-permanent Aries tattoo on his left arm. The off-white denim and sneakers completes the young, urban look.

Kgalalelo Babili, 25, from Botswana, strikes a pose in a funky cowgirl outfit. This all-black attire sets off the white cowboy hat – a real eye-catcher even from afar. Clad in a midriff-baring halter neck top from Saab, fur skirt cum pants from Private Label, and Reebok sneakers, Kgala says this ensemble reflects her outgoing personality.

Twenty-one-year-old Huyuan Yuan from China exudes femininity, knowing she can never go wrong in a skirt. Wearing a black sleeveless top from Sub, a blue-green print bag from home, a flowing mid-calf skirt, and Monaco shoes, Huyuan achieves that look of carefree abandon.

To suit her cheerful personality, Syahida Mohd Nazri wears a striped, multi-coloured three-quarter sleeved top from PDI matched with a pair of Levi’s flared jeans. She tops off the ensemble with a striped bag and grey suede shoes.

Smart Casual

Sporty and smart go hand-in hand in Jane Chai’s style. The 18-year-old matches a simple white top, denim skirt and bag with red Nike sneakers, exuding a fresh and vibrant appeal.

Hip Hop

Although J.Lo’s style inspires most of what Sharon’s Gill wears to college, the 17-year-old dresses down in a hooded black top with matching singlet from Elle, denims, an Esprit bag, and Vincci shoes – topped off with a baseball cap. The only thing remotely J.Lo are the hoop silver earrings and that megawatt smile.

Whether she’s off to college or not, 19-year-old Teh Lin Lin believes that looking your best is of utmost importance. Wearing a black top from The Gray and chic printed pants with front slits from Orange, Lin Lin completes the outfit with shoes from Vincci and a matching grey Guess Who? bag for that young, sophisticated look.
