THE National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) will make efforts to assist education institutions in Iraq through the Federation of International Teachers' Unions.

Its secretary-general, Datuk Siva Subramaniam, said it had called for the United Nations and the UN Children's Fund (Unicef) to guarantee that schools would be reopened as soon as the war ends.

“International efforts must be made to reopen schools and equip them with basic equipment required by students.”

He said NUTP would contact education institutions in Iraq to find out the needs of teachers and students and meet with the Iraqi teachers' union once the war ends. The union would also help in terms of providing medical facilities and humanitarian aid. – Bernama
