Hard times for arts' dons

A NEW pay scheme being proposed by the National University of Singapore (NUS) for its dons will probably result in big bucks for several business, law and engineering academics - but a pay cut for those in the general disciplines.

The NUS proposal that academics be paid for nine months' work and use the rest of their time to do more research and consultancy work can mean a doubling of some professors' salaries, which range from $130,000 to $160,000 (RM280,000-RM347,000) a year for associate professors.
